
After Alec Baldwin fatally shot the cinematographer on the “Rust” movie set in 2021, the film’s producers were hit with a spate of lawsuits claiming that the production had failed to follow proper safety protocols, increasing the likelihood of a tragedy.
The most prominent legal claim came from the family of the slain cinematographer, Halyna Hutchins, 42. But in October, the production company behind “Rust” announced that it had reached a settlement with the family that called for resuming production on the film and making Ms. Hutchins’s widower, Matthew Hutchins, an executive producer.
At one point there were plans to begin filming again this month.
But on Thursday prosecutors in New Mexico announced that they intended to file involuntary manslaughter charges against the film’s star, Mr. Baldwin, who is also one of its producers, complicating plans for the project. Could a western about a grizzled outlaw on the run from law enforcement continue to feature an actor who is fighting his own criminal charges?
A person with knowledge of the project who was granted anonymity to describe production plans said that as of Thursday, the movie was still on track to be completed with Mr. Baldwin in the lead role and Joel Souza, who was wounded in the shooting, returning as director. The project will include on-set safety supervisors and union crew members and will bar any use of working weapons or any form of live ammunition, including blanks, the person said.
Several crew members on the original set told investigators about two accidental discharges of blanks that occurred before the deadly shooting, underlining safety concerns. A couple dozen cast and crew members signed a letter seeking to counter suggestions that the set was dangerous.
The Santa Fe County district attorney, Mary Carmack-Altwies, said that the movie’s original armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, would also be charged with involuntary manslaughter and that Dave Halls, the original first assistant director, had agreed to a plea deal on a charge of negligent use of a deadly weapon.
A lawyer for Mr. Baldwin, Luke Nikas, said on Thursday that the planned prosecution of Mr. Baldwin “represents a terrible miscarriage of justice” and that the actor would be exonerated. Asked later whether Mr. Baldwin intended to continue in the production of the film, Mr. Nikas did not immediately reply.
It is not yet clear where the production plans to restart filming, if it moves ahead. The fatal shooting occurred on the outskirts of Santa Fe at Bonanza Creek Ranch, a picturesque location for movie westerns since the 1950s. Last year, the production said that returning to New Mexico was not an option but that locations in California were under consideration.
“Rust,” set in late 19th-century Kansas, centers on Mr. Baldwin’s character, Harland Rust, who is trying to help his teenage grandson escape from a sentence to be hanged after the accidental killing of a local rancher.
The fatal shooting of Ms. Hutchins came on the 12th day of a 21-day film shoot that involved horses, snakes and more than two dozen guns. In the scene Mr. Baldwin was practicing when the revolver discharged, his character decides to shoot his way out of a small wooden church after being cornered by the authorities.
The Hutchinses have a son, who is now 10. In the months after the boy’s mother was killed, the tensions between Mr. Baldwin and Mr. Hutchins have occasionally spilled into the public. After Mr. Baldwin gave an interview with ABC News in which he fiercely denied responsibility for the tragedy, Mr. Hutchins responded with his own television interview. He told NBC’s “Today” show, “The idea that the person holding the gun and causing it to discharge is not responsible is absurd to me.”
When the settlement was reached, Mr. Hutchins said in a statement that he had “no interest in engaging in recriminations or attribution of blame” and that “all of us believe Halyna’s death was a terrible accident.”
Responding to the decision to charge Mr. Baldwin on Thursday, a lawyer for Mr. Hutchins said his client was supportive of the direction the prosecutors had taken.
“It is a comfort to the family that, in New Mexico, no one is above the law,” the lawyer, Brian J. Panish, said in a statement. “We support the charges, will fully cooperate with this prosecution and fervently hope the justice system works to protect the public and hold accountable those who break the law.”

Is Ant-Man 3 In Trouble?
Over the last several years, the term reshoots have become an indication that a film is in trouble. Famously controversial movies like Justice League and Suicide Squad went through rushed reshoots which were extensively discussed after their respective releases. However, it's worth noting that for big blockbusters, productions typically have additional filming and pick-ups baked into their schedule in the event that the movies need some last-minute changes. Since the aforementioned Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania images lack context, it's difficult to say what Marvel Studios' additional photography may be.
That being said, it's also worth noting that since this appears to be a simple shot of Scott Lang carrying a box of what appears to be Baskin Robbins, it could be something that has minimal impact on the threequel's narrative. As seen in Ant-Man 3's trailer, it seems like much of the film will take place in the Quantum Realm, where the Langs and the Pyms battle it out against Kang the Conqueror. Perhaps the scene Rudd is filming is for comedic purposes only, otherwise, it could be an establishing shot.
Admittedly, seeing a blockbuster still filming about a month before its release could be worrying. However, this isn't anything new for Marvel Studios. The famous Shawarma post-credits scene from The Avengers wasn't shot until after the movie made its initial premiere. All the stress and last-minute preparation were all worth it considering how iconic that Shawarma stinger has become. So, if Marvel Studios were able to pull that off, then there's a good chance that there isn't anything to worry about regarding Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

A new Avatar: The Way of Water featurette shows how practical performance capture stunts were used to bring the film's epic underwater CGI action scenes to life. 13 years after the release of the original film, director James Cameron returns to the world of Pandora with Avatar: The Way of Water, a sequel that continues the story of Jake (Sam Worthington), Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña), and their new family. The film sees the Sully family on the run from their forest home after the return of human forces to Pandora. Avatar: The Way of Water has earned strong reviews from audiences and critics alike, with particular praise levied at the film's jaw-dropping visual effects and action.
Although most of the action that ends up on-screen in Avatar: The Way of Water is generated in a computer, a new featurette from the Avatar YouTube channel (shared via IndieWire) shows how performance capture was used to bring the film to life. Worthington, Saldaña, and the other actors did much of the performance capture themselves, but the video makes clear that a very talented stunt team, led by stunt coordinator Garrett Warren, went above and beyond to capture the film's more dangerous or intricate sequences. On top of more traditional stunt work like fights and falls, the featurette also reveals that advanced technical rigs were built from scratch to serve as ikrans, ilus, and other Pandoran wildlife that characters interact with.
Why The Way Of Water's CGI Looks So Good
Upon its release back in 2009, Cameron's first Avatar redefined what CGI could look like in a film, bringing to life an entire planet, including a host of flora and fauna, at a level that had never been seen before. Avatar: The Way of Water significantly ups the ante once more, presenting what often appears to be photo-real environments and characters, rendered with extreme amounts of detail. On top of the technical advancements, patents, and individual artist skill that went into crafting the movie's visual effects, Cameron's dedication to performance capture is what ultimately elevates Avatar: The Way of Water's CGI above anything else.
Actors like Worthington, Saldaña, Stephen Lang, Sigourney Weaver, Jamie Flatters, and Britain Dalton do most of what their characters do on-screen in Avatar: The Way of Water, only they do it while wearing performance capture suits on a soundstage. From traversing the rain forests of Pandora to fighting, embracing, swimming, and flying, most of the actions scene on screen have an actual actors' performance behind it, which helps to imbue the characters with more emotion and sell the entire experience as "real". For Avatar: The Way of Water, Cameron's decision to film underwater scenes in a massive water tank using performance capture is what really sells that the characters are moving through and interacting with water in a realistic way.
What Avatar: The Way of Water really proves, more than anything, is that although technology will continue to advance and CGI will come closer and closer to real-life, an actor's or stunt performer's performance is what is really needed to sell emotion, movement, and humanity. Avatar: The Way of Water's box office continues to knock it out of the park, and audiences are now all but guaranteed to see the Sullys' story play out in a third, fourth, and fifth film, which will surely feature even more impressive stunt work.
The shield of Captain America is almost as famous as he is as it is not only a weapon used in battle, but a symbol of how Captain America protects the world from injustice–and now, that shield has taken on an entirely new purpose, one that was revealed upon the epic exhibition of Captain America’s hidden power.
Steve Rogers became Captain America after he signed up for experimental treatment that promised to transform him into a Super Soldier. After the treatment was a success, Rogers became the secret weapon of the Allied Forces against the Nazis during World War II, and he single-handedly weakened the fascist regime with the many missions he completed. During the mission that he didn’t know would be his last, Cap and Bucky downed a Nazi aircraft carrying bombs over the Arctic, and Steve found himself frozen in ice for years. Eventually, Captain America was found, thawed, and given the chance to join the Avengers–effectively going from being a soldier during World War II to being a modern-day superhero. Throughout that time, Captain America proved time and again that he represented the best of what humanity had to offer by personifying the ideal vision for the United States, even if that vision is little more than a fantasy. Still, while the government isn’t free of corruption, Captain America is–and one secret power within his arsenal is a big reason as to why.
In the A+X #4 story “Captain America + Quentin Quire” by Jason Latour and David López, fans are given yet another unexpected team-up between a member of the X-Men and an Avenger–and this time, it is between Captain America and Quentin Quire. Quentin Quire may be a lesser-known mutant within the X-Men lineup, but their power-level makes them immediately memorable. Quire is an Omega-level telepath who was recruited by Captain America in this story after Wolverine recommended Quire for the job. Essentially, Cap was infiltrating A.I.M. and needed a telepath to back him up in case M.O.D.O.K. tried to invade his mind. However, readers quickly learn that his need for telepathic backup was just a safety measure as Captain America had his own psychic defenses. When Quentin tried to invade Cap’s mind, Quire’s mental-image was physically blocked by a giant version of Cap’s shield–making Captain America’s mind completely unreachable, even to an Omega-level mutant.
Captain America’s Shield Protects Him Physically & Mentally
While the version of Captain America’s shield that protects his mind from telepathic invaders isn’t the same physical shield he uses in real life, both are weapons used by Captain America to achieve exactly the same purpose. Cap’s mental-shield protects his mind, while his physical shield protects his body. What’s more is that both can also be used to launch an offensive attack against aggressors. The shield within Cap’s mind is able to hold a telepathic invader at bay while Rogers’ mind has time to strike back against them. Similarly, Captain America’s physical shield is made from the unbreakable vibranium, so while it protects him from virtually any attack, it can also be used as a weapon in the form of a blunt object or razor-sharp projectile.
Not only does Captain America’s secret mental-protection power give his shield a whole-new purpose, but it also speaks to his already impressive power. Quentin Quire has been established as one of the strongest telepaths on the X-Men, and even they couldn’t infiltrate the giant shield Captain America erected to protect his mind. This proves Captain America is just as indomitable mentally as he is physically, and in both cases, he has his trusty shield to help him.

Upon his debut and throughout the first era of Dragon Ball, Goku was a fighter who simply couldn’t be beaten. Practically anyone he went up against was defeated, and if they weren’t beaten right away, they would eventually lose to Goku after some prolonged training. From a world-class assassin and an entire fascist regime to a centuries-old demonic alien, there was no one stronger than Goku on Planet Earth–that is, until some fighters came down from the stars and gave Goku a legitimate challenge. When the Saiyans invaded Earth in Dragon Ball Z, they ushered in a new era for Goku, one filled with fighters who proved stronger than the heroic warrior. This trend continued through Dragon Ball Super as not only did Goku tangle with intergalactic warriors and killer androids, but multiversal fighters and literal gods. However, time and again, Goku still continued to prove that he could best practically anyone he came across–something that wasn’t necessarily true in Dragon Ball GT.
In Dragon Ball GT season 1, episode 21 (written by Aya Matsui, directed by Osamu Kasai, produced by Toei Animation), Goku and Pan are fighting for their lives while they are trapped on the planet M2. M2 is a world that has been completely assimilated by the Machine Mutants, and it is ruled over by the villainous Dr. Myuu who wants to capture the Saiyans and use their power to create a new race of Machine Mutants. In that effort, Myuu has deployed GT's strongest Machine Mutant of that time, General Rilldo, who is not only connected to and powered by the entire planet itself, but also has the unique ability to transform someone into a slab of metal and instantaneously teleport them to Dr. Myuu’s lab for experimentation. While Goku put up a pretty good fight against Rilldo over the course of the last few episodes, this episode depicted Goku’s ultimate failure as Rilldo succeeded in turning him and Pan into metal and sending them to Myuu’s lab.
Goku Never Beat General Rilldo, Even During their Rematch
In Dragon Ball GT season 1, episode 23 (written by Junki Takegami, directed by Osamu Kasai, produced by Toei Animation), Goku, Pan, and Trunks break free of Myuu’s clutches and make their escape off M2. However, before they can do that, they must first defeat General Rilldo who is guarding their spaceship. With their combined might, all three Saiyans are able to kill the Machine Mutant with a concentrated blast and successfully get away. While that is good, it doesn’t really redeem Goku’s loss. One-on-one, Rilldo proved to be stronger and more tactically skilled than Goku. In fact, Rilldo’s eventual defeat only speaks to how truly powerful he was as it took the full power of three Saiyans to take him down.
It feels strange that a seemingly insignificant and short-lived villain like General Rilldo is one of the few villains who Goku can’t defeat alone, especially when considering the amount and caliber of villains he’s battled throughout his career–but, shocking or not, the proof is all over these Dragon Ball GT episodes. Goku lost to Rilldo, and he only beat him with the help of two other Saiyans, proving that he couldn’t take the villain down alone–a chain of events that confirms the one Dragon Ball GT villain Goku can’t beat.

Multiverse-related stories are all the rage in entertainment nowadays, and Versus is no exception. In the first chapter, readers are introduced to a fantasy world where humans are under threat from the race of demons. To avoid extinction, 47 heroes are trained and assembled to defeat just as many generals of the Great Demon King. However, they are all defeated, because demons are simply naturally superior to humans. In fact, the heroes' brave mission was only a cover for the real plan of humanity: creating a network of magic portals throughout the world that will allow the summoning of allies from another dimension. When these otherworlders arrive, however, it's revealed that they are also on the run from a terrible menace.
Chapter #2 of Versus, by ONE, Kyotarou Azuma, and Boze, shows that the inhabitants from the "other world", whose leader looks a lot like One-Punch Man's Genos, are technologically more advanced, as they hail from what looks like a sci-fi setting. However, in their world, humanity is also on the verge of extinction, this time from a different enemy: robots. They also developed means to contact other worlds, and they were hoping to get help in their plight. The "fantasy humans" and the "sci-fi humans" are initially able to help each other, as each group's specific set of powers and skills is effective against the enemies of the other (magic works well against robots, and high-tech weapons are good against demons). However, their enemies soon adapt, and the humans are forced to flee. Soon after, it is revealed that endangered humans from many other worlds have simultaneously developed a way to contact other dimensions, and they have all flocked to the "fantasy world" and found refuge in a fortress called the "Fort of Humanity".
The Heroes Of The Versus Multiverse Are On The Brink Of Extinction
Versus has quickly developed into something very different from its advertised premise of a classic fantasy manga. The initial reveal of the connection with a sci-fi world was already exciting, but the addition of a Multiverse (a concept that One-Punch Man has also recently introduced), brings everything to a whole new level. ONE's trademark originality comes out through the idea that the protagonists of the story are all refugees. Humanity is in danger in every world, even if the threats are different. From what was shown in this second chapter, it is likely that the key to humanity's survival lies in the cooperation between the survivors of different worlds.
The overarching theme of this story seems to be "natural enemies", meaning that in nature every species, including humans, has an "absolute predator". However, this predator is different in each world, so it can be countered by humans from another world, even if the situation of the survivors currently seems dire. This is a very different setting from One-Punch Man, where the main character is so strong that he doesn't need help and is never in actual danger. Refugees are usually portrayed as victims, so it's not just original but also very uplifting that Versus decided to make them the heroes of its story.

This perhaps should not be surprising as series author Eiichiro Oda has constantly come up with new and innovative ways for Luffy to use his powers in combat. But it is still always a joy to see Luffy continue to push the limits of his abilities in a fresh and exciting way.
In chapter 1070 Luffy is fighting his old enemy Rob Lucci using his awakened Devil Fruit powers in Gear Fifth. He throws a variety of fun new attacks at Lucci, but one of the silliest is when he opens his mouth wide to seemingly try to eat his foe. Lucci manages to dodge out of the way, but Luffy then bangs his cheeks together to spray the chunks of the ground that he bit off when he missed at his enemy. While this attack ultimately isn't too effective, it still is a neat reference to one of Luffy's more comedic character traits.
Luffy's goofiness is a big part of what makes his character so popular. He has very simple needs including a ravenous appetite that often causes him to get into various humorous situations. While his hunger is mainly used for comedic effect, it can also make certain dramatic moments even more intense such as when he starved until Sanji fed him in Whole Cake Island and when he found out about the starving villagers in Wano. His comedic traits also enhance his fighting style, especially after Luffy discovered Gear Fifth in Wano. This technique lets him be free to fight however he wants to, which manifests itself in absurd attacks straight out of a cartoon. These two comedic traits combined in his biting attack this chapter, which was awesome to see.
Luffy's New Attack Is a Natural Extension of His Character
Part of what makes One Piece such a joy to read is how seamlessly intertwined its various elements are. The series rewards its fans for paying careful attention and this moment was no different. If a reader didn't know about Luffy's voracious appetite, his biting attack may have just seemed like a goofy application of his powers rather than a natural extension of his character. This sort of detail is why fans will endlessly dissect every panel of this incredible series.
It is unclear if Luffy will ever use this biting attack again, as it didn't seem very effective and Gear Fifth enables Luffy to fight in a myriad of other ways as well. But even if he never revisits it, its awesomeness as a subtle reference to one of his goofier character traits will never be diminished. And so by weaponizing Luffy's goofiest trait One Piece once again proved why it is one of the best manga of all time.

The Winter finale of Season 6 of My Hero Academia teases one of the worst possible conclusions for the series. The first cour of Season 6 followed the fierce battle between the heroes and the Paranormal Liberation Front led by Shigaraki. Still, as the big villain manages to make his escape, the protagonist Deku implies that he will try to redeem him, despite the terrible crimes Shigaraki has committed.
Season 6 of My Hero Academia has been a must-watch anime of the 2022 Fall lineup. It adapts one of the best, most exciting arcs from the manga, the Paranormal Liberation War. Studio Bones cemented its status as one of the best animation studios currently active, delivering a beautiful and faithful adaptation of the manga. The heroes' assault on the Paranormal Liberation Front was thwarted by the destructive powers of Tomura Shigaraki, who re-emerged with all the Quirks of his master, All for One, leveling entire cities and killing thousands of people. Only the intervention of Midoriya and of the pro heroes Endeavor and Best Jeanist managed to stop Shigaraki, but the final reckoning is only postponed.
In episode #13 of My Hero Academia, which concludes the first cour of Season 6, the villain Mr. Compress sacrifices himself to let his companions escape and wake up Shigaraki, who was unconscious after his battle against Deku and Endeavor. The villain awakens but with All for One in control of his body, who summons his Nomu soldiers and successfully escapes from the battlefield. As Deku desperately tries and fails to stop him, the boy thinks of the moment, in the One for All mental landscape, when he saw Shigaraki struggle for control against All for One. According to Izuku, in that moment Shigaraki looked like he wanted to be rescued, meaning that the hero will try to do just that in their next encounter.
Deku Trying To Save Shigaraki Could Ruin My Hero Academia's Finale
Many fans who read the My Hero Academia manga share the fear that, in its finale, the series will stumble into one of the most common clichés of the genre, and make Shigaraki a redeemable villain. While the other big antagonist, All for One, is clearly beyond any possible redemption, the strange bond between Midoriya and Tomura hints that the latter still has a chance. However, Shigaraki has killed countless people and made many close to Deku suffer. While he has certainly been manipulated by All for One to a degree, ultimately Tomura's choices were his own. Despite his tragic backstory, many fans believe that the villain should not get any measure of mercy and simply pay for all his crimes.
As fans wait for the second cour of Season 6 to begin airing in January 2023, the question of Shigaraki's fate is a pressing one. After all the devastation brought by the villains during this battle, the people's faith in the heroes crumbles, plunging Japan into chaos, and it's all Tomura's fault. However, the defining trait of heroes is that they never lose hope, so it's natural that Midoriya will still try to save Shigaraki in the end. Whatever happens in the rest of Season 6, Deku's decision regarding Shigaraki will define the finale of My Hero Academia.

Talking about the healing power of animals is more than New Age gibberish. Dogs are currently being trained to monitor the blood sugar levels of diabetic owners, and scientists are cautiously beginning to explore the claim that they can sniff out some cancers, too. Cats lie on their people and purr in an attempt to heal, and just listening to the sound calms anxiety and stress. This hypothesis is taken to its extreme in “Wildcat,” a new documentary about a man needing redemption and a cat in need of saving.
The man in question is Harry Turner, an Englishman in his early twenties who was deployed to Afghanistan when he was 18 years old and emerged from his tour of duty with burn marks on his arms and severe PTSD. Such extreme trauma requires an extreme solution, and so Harry travels literally to the other side of the world in search of peace. That would be the Peruvian Amazon, where Harry follows a similarly troubled American Ph.D. student named Samatha Zwicker to volunteer at her wildlife research and rehabilitation center, Hoja Nueva. There, these self-described “lost souls” turn to the jungle—and each other—for comfort.
The film never reveals how Harry and Samatha met, and it’s not clear until midway through that their relationship is romantic. This was presumably done to respect the subjects’ boundaries; Samantha, in particular, has probably been to some therapy, based on her ability to communicate her feelings clearly. But it does raise some questions about transparency on the part of filmmakers Trevor Frost and Melissa Lesh, who also include some manipulative scenes with Harry and his family later in the film. “Wildcat” also does little to expand the narrative around two white kids in the Peruvian jungle trying to protect the forest from, well, Peruvians. Again, Samantha is the more conscious one here, but the filmmakers are content to leave the context of Harry and Samantha’s presence along the Las Piedras River unexplored.
Instead, “Wildcat” focuses on a different bond: Harry’s unusual, highly emotional connection with a baby ocelot named Keanu. Keanu is actually the second baby ocelot Harry has hand-raised; the first 15 minutes or so document his relationship with another cat named Khan, who (spoiler alert) dies after being shot by poachers mere weeks before he was supposed to go back into the wild. Harry takes Khan’s death extremely hard, to the point where he becomes despondent and suicidal. One starts to wonder if maybe this young man is hanging too much of his mental stability on a cat, but this is only the beginning.
It’s a comfort knowing that Harry is never really alone in the jungle, even when Samantha gets called back to the U.S. to finish her thesis. Frost and Lesh were there throughout, which is important because Harry goes through some very dark periods when he’s “alone” with his memories of the war in the rough platform building he calls home. The thing that keeps Harry going is his bond with Keanu, who Harry is hand-raising in the style of a mother ocelot so Keanu can rejoin the wild when he gets old enough to fend for himself.
And Harry does act like Keanu’s mom, teaching the young cat to hunt and breaking down in tears when he spends the night alone in the jungle for the first time. (They grow up so fast—in this case, in 18 months.) It’s not clear if the intense experience of mothering this animal, and the emotional rollercoaster that comes with it, is helping or hurting Harry; when the time comes to push Keanu out of the proverbial nest, the tough love required opens a vein of anger inside of Harry that’s frightening to watch. The swelling strings on the score tell us that this is all productive, and the project's thesis requires that Harry come out of this experience a changed person. But he really should be enrolled in some aftercare after essentially using a stint at a wildlife rehabilitation center as intense PTSD therapy.
To Harry, Keanu is family. Everyone else in this film is family, too, whether biological or chosen. And it is an unfortunate truth that other people’s family albums are more interesting to them than they are to anyone else. (Take the sequence where Harry’s parents come for a visit, which is edited together like a vacation video.) Exceptions can be made for baby ocelots, of course, and the portions of the film that are just footage of Keanu romping and pouncing and not knowing his own strength provide the dopamine jolt that viewers crave from a movie like this one. But while the points where “Wildcat” goes beyond simply being a feel-good nature documentary and delves into Harry’s mental health struggles are honest, they raise more questions than they answer. Keanu will be fine. It’s his human parent one worries about.

The Witcher franchise is in serious trouble after the release of The Witcher: Blood Origin. Starring Henry Cavill as Geralt and Freya Allan as his young ward Ciri, the first season of The Witcher - which released back in 2019 - was a hit for Netflix. According to third-party analytics company Parrot Analytics, it measured in the top 0.2 per cent of TV shows in demand. Netflix wasted no time renewing the fantasy series, but they went one step further. They began working to transform The Witcher into the next big franchise.
Netflix's approach has been an unusual one. There's now some sort of Witcher spin-off between each season, exploring the history of the Continent and providing crucial new information. The latest series, The Witcher: Blood Origin, is essential backstory that tells the true story of the Conjunction of the Spheres - a cosmic event that brought monsters to the Continent, as well as humans. The end of The Witcher: Blood Origin ties these events in to Ciri through a new prophecy, a smart narrative approach that should help ensure the franchise remains cohesive. Unfortunately, as well-thought-through as Netflix's approach may be, it sadly looks to be failing.
The Witcher: Blood Origin Isn't Good Enough To Maintain Interest
The first two seasons of The Witcher were a tremendous success. Casting choices were inspired, the scripts were smart, the overarching narrative was compelling, and the visual effects were stunning. The Witcher: Blood Origin fails to reach anywhere near this benchmark, however, and it has come in for heavy criticism from fans and critics alike. Reviews of The Witcher: Blood Origin have been uniformly dire, with the pacing coming in for particular criticism; Netflix unwisely cut the show down from six episodes to four, meaning characters were never given the time to develop, and essential twists feel like artificial plot contrivances. Far from encouraging interest in further spinoffs, the Netflix TV show raises the question of whether this franchise is worth investing in.
The Witcher: Blood Origin Has Released At The Worst Possible Time
Every franchise stumbles, of course, but the timing of The Witcher: Blood Origin makes matters even worse. This prequel series is releasing at a time when viewers are already questioning the future of The Witcher, because of the high-profile exit of Henry Cavill. A dedicated fan of Andrej Sapkowski's books, Cavill is believed to have become unhappy because the main series is increasingly deviating from the source material. These changes had already become controversial among the fanbase, but they now seem to have cost The Witcher its star. Netflix has cast Liam Hemsworth in the role, but few believe the recasting will work.
Netflix hoped to build a massive franchise around The Witcher, but those dreams are turning to ash. This ongoing failure is particularly problematic given the streaming giant had hoped The Witcher could fill the gap left by the imminent end of its current biggest franchise, Stranger Things - and it's difficult to believe that will be the case. The Witcher prequel couldn't have released at a worse time, and Netflix will need to figure out how to adjust for this. The Witcher: Blood Origin may well have sealed the franchise's fate, as Netflix look elsewhere for their next big thing.

What's more, the end-credits confirm he's followed the mysterious Storyteller's guidance, transforming the tale of the first Witcher into what he calls "The Song of the Seven" - and it's reasonable to assume Geralt and Ciri will come across it. That means (almost) all the revelations in The Witcher: Blood Origin will soon be known by the main characters as well, ensuring there's a level playing field. Here are all the major twists and changes to the lore viewers need to know ahead of The Witcher season 3, in which Geralt and Ciri's adventures continue.
The Witcher: Blood Origin Finally Explains The Conjunction Of The Spheres
The most important reveal, of course, is an explanation for the celestial event known as the Conjunction of the Spheres. The Witcher: Blood Origin builds on ideas established in The Witcher season 3, confirming the mysterious monoliths scattered across the Continent really can be used to travel through time and space. Elves discovered (or, perhaps, re-discovered) how to use monoliths in this way some 1,200 years ago, but the master monolith was broken during the uprising that brought down the last elven Golden Empire. The destruction of this monolith brought countless worlds and times together, and it seems to have inaugurated a new age where different planes are closer together than before - an age described by Ithlinne as "the time of the Spheres." This presumably explains Ciri's developing powers.
The Origin Of The First Witcher Has Finally Been Revealed
The Witcher: Blood Origin reveals the backstory of the Witchers, who are more closely connected to the Conjunction of the Spheres than has been previously known. Fjal was the first Witcher, undergoing a version of the Trial of the Grasses that incorporated the blood of a monster steeped in Chaos. The power seems to have been diluted over time, because Geralt is nowhere near as powerful as Fjal. He is also, thankfully, a lot less unstable. It's unclear how significant this revelation will be to Geralt.

The Walking Dead season 11 is set to come to Netflix incredibly soon. The post-apocalyptic zombie series, which is based on the Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore, and Charlie Adlard graphic novel series of the same name, originally began airing on AMC in 2010. With an ever-expanding and contracting cast that included Andrew Lincoln, Jon Bernthal, Sarah Wayne Callies, Laurie Holden, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Steven Yeun, Chandler Riggs, Norman Reedus, Lauren Cohan, and Danai Gurira, the gory and popular drama ran for 11 seasons, during which time it racked up 16 Emmy nominations and won 2.
Without much fanfare, Netflix officially listed the streaming premiere date of The Walking Dead season 11 on the streaming service's page for the overall series. According to their announcement, the season will arrive very soon into the New Year, on Friday, January 6. This comes just under two months after the series aired its finale on AMC on November 20, 2022.
The Future of The Walking Dead
Fans have already lamented the ending of the landmark series, and those who have been waiting for it to drop on Netflix won't have long until they become similarly bereft. However, in spite of the series going off the air for good, the Walking Dead Universe will still be going strong in the coming years. This is in addition to the spinoff series that have already aired, including the prequel Fear the Walking Dead (which has already aired for seven seasons with an eighth on the way), the sequel series The Walking Dead: World Beyond (which aired for two seasons between 2020 and 2021), and the anthology Tales of the Walking Dead (which premiered season 1 earlier in 2022).
On top of the upcoming Fear the Walking Dead season 8 and a potential Tales of the Walking Dead season 2 (which has not yet been officially announced by AMC at the time of writing), there are quite a few additional Walking Dead Universe shows in the works. The first up in April 2023 is the spinoff The Walking Dead: Dead City, which will follow reluctant partners Maggie (Cohan) and Negan (Morgan) as they find themselves with a new group of survivors in zombie-infested Manhattan. Another series that is coming soon will follow fan-favorite character Daryl Dixon (Reedus) after he mysteriously winds up in France.
Also coming soon is one of the most hotly anticipated follow-ups to The Walking Dead, which was originally announced as a trilogy of movies several years ago. That project, which has since been retooled into another spinoff television series for AMC, will follow original main character Rick Grimes (Lincoln) and his adventures with Michonne (Gurira). The series will be a love story taking place during the events following Lincoln's exit in The Walking Dead season 9.

Agents of SHIELD star Iain De Caestecker explains why he thinks it was a good thing that the characters never appeared in a Marvel Cinematic Universe movie. The ABC original series that began in 2013 was originally sold as being directly connected to the MCU movies. Agents of SHIELD's habit of including many connections early on eventually faded as the films continued to ignore what the show was doing, making fan hopes to see Phil Coulson, Daisy Johnson, and others appear in the films seem less likely. Agents of SHIELD ultimately ended in 2020 without any of the characters making crossover appearances in the films.
Despite the interest from fans, the lack of an Agents of SHIELD MCU movie crossover was always explained as being a product of complicated scheduling. The show arguably benefited as it veered away from the films, as it gave the show more freedom to pursue its own stories. During a new interview with Collider, Fitz actor Iain De Caestecker was asked if he had hopes of appearing in the MCU movies. He admits that it would have been fun to make that crossover happen, but he also states that he was happy with the crossovers that happened on Agents of SHIELD. Furthermore, De Caestecker explains why he liked the separation between the show and the movies.
Will Agents of SHIELD's Characters Ever Return In The MCU?
It has been over two years since the characters were last seen in the Agents of SHIELD season 7 finale, but that has not slowed down the calls for them to return. There is just as strong of a push from the fandom to have the Agents come back in an upcoming MCU movie as there was when the show was releasing new episodes. Most of the campaigning is built around Chloe Bennet's Quake making her well-deserved MCU movie appearance. There are so far no announcements that any Agents of SHIELD character will be back in an upcoming MCU project.
The lack of confirmation that Agents of SHIELD's characters will return would usually be a disheartening silence - especially as the show became so separated from the MCU it was fair to question if it was still canon. However, Marvel Studios has proven that bringing Marvel TV actors back is now possible after Daredevil stars Charlie Cox and Vincent D'Onofrio returned as Daredevil and Kingpin. This provided a renewed optimism that Kevin Feige could one day bring back some of the more popular Agents of SHIELD characters.
There is certainly room for Agents of SHIELD's characters to return in the MCU movies or a Disney+ series. The multiverse opens the door for variants of the heroes to return without worrying about the show's canon. Whether it is Daisy Johnson, Melinda May, Phil Coulson, Mockingbird, Ghost Rider, FitzSimmons, or others, several Agents of SHIELD's characters deserve a chance to come back and work within the larger sandbox.

Sandra Oh starred as Cristina in Grey’s Anatomy for ten seasons but, in a twist, she didn’t technically audition for the role, landing it anyway. When showrunner Shonda Rhimes was casting actors for the pilot episode in 2005, Oh was considered and got the chance to audition, but left before the audition took place. She still ended up getting the role, however, and played the beloved character for a decade.
During a recent interview (via Vanity Fair), Sandra Oh spoke about how she got the part of Cristina. When Rhimes was looking for actors to star in the Grey’s Anatomy pilot in 2005, a pilot episode was all there was. ABC had yet to order more of the show, and even when execs eventually did, it was only a six-episode season. Oh had been in several television films before and was booking roles regularly, but she had yet to have her big breakout role. In a twist of fate, her Grey’s Anatomy character Cristina Yang ended up becoming one of her most well-known roles.
Why Sandra Oh's Managers Told Her To Walk From The Audition
When Oh went to audition for the role of Cristina Yang, she came in early to workshop the character with Rhimes. When it came time for the actual audition, though, her team called her and told her to walk out because they felt ABC couldn’t give Oh the deal she deserved. Despite leaving before the audition had technically begun, Rhimes had seen her act as Cristina while they were workshopping the role. Oh explained that she said no, "but then Shonda said ‘I want her.'" By turning down the role at first, Oh got the deal she deserved, and her preparation and devotion that she displayed got her cast in Grey’s Anatomy.
How Grey's Anatomy Would Have Been Different Without Sandra Oh
Cristina Yang was one of the most important characters on Grey’s Anatomy, right along with titular character Meredith Grey. A fantastic surgeon and a career-oriented, competitive person, Cristina was Meredith’s best friend until the character moved to Switzerland to justify Oh’s exit from the show. Oh’s performance as Cristina earned her five Emmy nominations in a row. She played a key character and greatly contributed to the show’s success with her performance.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer alum David Boreanaz shares a sweetly funny story about meeting co-star Sarah Michelle Gellar for the first time. Although it showed flashes of the transcendent show that it would gradually become, the first season of Buffy had a few noticeable growing pains. One thing that helped the series right from the jump, however, was the chemistry between Gellar and Boreanaz. As the titular slayer, Gellar's character was drawn to Boreanaz's brooding vampire Angel, and it kicked off a love story that has continued to spark debate long after Buffy and its spinoff Angel ended.
In an interview on The Summit with Josh Horowitz, Boreanaz looked back on his long career in television and reflected on his reaction to meeting Gellar after he'd signed on to play Angel. From a distanced perspective, Buffy and Angel had that forbidden romance aspect that fuels a lot of relationships in pop culture. The fierce debate about which character is right for Buffy still continues, and whether she needs to end up with any particular person at all. Too often, Angel is summed up as being Buffy's first love and a high school experience that wouldn't stand the test of time.

There’s a lot to talk about with Dragon Ball Z’s Namek Saga, and surprisingly, one topic is the idea of it secretly being a Christmas special. While Dragon Ball does have a defined timeline, it often doesn’t specify the dates that certain stories take place in, usually only saying that it’s been a certain number of years since the story that immediately preceded it. Specific dates of stories have been given out in the official Dragon Ball databooks known as the Daizenshuu, and while it doesn’t add a lot to the series, it does work to develop the franchise a little more.
With the dates assigned to different Dragon Ball stories, a surprising conclusion that can be drawn is the Namek Saga secretly being a Christmas special. According to Daizenshuu 7, the final stages of Dragon Ball Z's Namek Saga took place on Christmas Eve (via Kanzenshuu.com), so that means the Namek Saga can be seen as a Christmas special for technically taking place during Christmastime in the same vein as Die Hard or Batman Returns. It’s a humorous thing to think about, and it even makes a joke in another Dragon Ball-related story even better.
Does Christmas Even Exist In Dragon Ball?
Regarding the idea of the Namek saga being a Christmas special, something that needs to be addressed is whether Christmas even exists in Dragon Ball's universe. The only time anyone is ever shown celebrating Christmas is during an extra scene in the Namek Saga of the manga where Dragon Ball's Master Roshi is shown wearing a Santa suit. However, that was a gag scene done as part of all the Weekly Shonen Jump authors celebrating the holidays, so it likely isn’t meant to be canon.

Avatar: The Way of Water has shown that a grim future awaits one of its core characters. Avatar: The Way of Water returns to Pandora over a decade after the first Avatar, with Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) the father of four children with his Na'vi wife Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) and leading the Omaticaya tribe. However, his new life as a Na'vi gets turned upside down when some of his human enemies from Avatar return to Pandora.
In The Way of Water, the villainous Colonel Miles Quaritch returns in an Avatar body, with his mind and memories uploaded to it. Quaritch leads a team of Jake's old enemies on a revenge mission for their defeat in Avatar, but is beaten again by Jake and his fellow Na'vi, including the sea-faring Metkayina tribe. Quaritch does not die the end of The Way of Water, but despite this, James Cameron's future plans for the Avatar franchise demonstrate that a tough road lies ahead for Quaritch. However, it is for different reasons than one might expect, and goes back to who Quaritch is as a person.
The Avatar Franchise Could Be Heading For Earth
Producer John Landau has offered some differing accounts on Avatar 5's plans involving Earth. After stating that the film will involve "a section of the story where we go to Earth", Landau later clarified in another interview that the franchise will "keep all the stories on Pandora". However, there could be cryptic details at play about the Avatar franchise's story that Landau cannot fully disclose yet. Landau specifically stating that "a section" of Avatar 5 would visit Earth could be the key to understanding plans for the franchise.
